8 reasons why you should start eating bison meat.

8 reasons why you should start eating bison

There are many reasons why demand for bison meat has been growing steadily this past decade. You may see it popping up more and more in your news sources, grocery stores, restaurants and conversations with other meat loving foodies.

The fact is, bison is gaining it's massive popularity for good reason. As our culture takes harder looks at the foods we are eating, the way we are producing our food supply and our relationship with the planet and the impact we have on it, bison contains pluses in a lot of the right columns.

Those who are looking for a healthier red meat, raised naturally, sustainably and responsibly have found it in bison meat. Although demand is at an all-time high, we work hard to ensure we can bring the highest quality bison meat directly to your door to make bison as accessible as possible.

So, you're probably wanting a little more information. What are all these reasons you should make bison your red meat of choice?

1. It's Lower in Fat.

Bison is a very lean meat. You'll see it in the marbling (or lack there of) and how quickly it can cook. (Which is why we ALWAYS recommend cooking low and slow -- bison cooks quickly!) You'll see it in how little grease you have from cooking our 90% lean ground bison burger.

In fact, a 4 oz. serving of Ground Bison has 11g of fat - only 17% of the Daily Recommended Value (based of course on a 2000 calorie diet). At the same time, a 4 oz. serving of Bison Chuck Roast has only 3.5g of fat and a 6 oz. Bison Filet Mignon has 3g of fat.

I think that's pretty awesome. Especially when you compare it to other meat sources. If you want a full breakdown of nutritional comparisons between bison and other meats, check out this handy chart:

2. Bison is tasty, tender and delicious.

You might be surprised, but most people agree that bison is quite tasty and very similar in taste to beef. (Not to mention all the other benefits we're listing). I often describe bison as having a slightly sweeter, richer flavor. But of course you shouldn't just take my word for it. Check out some of these videos and comments from our customers as well!

"This is by far the best cut of meat I have ever had. We have it every Christmas and get nothing but rave reviews. Highly recommend both the Prime Rib and Nebraska Bison" - Mike C. (Modesto, CA)

"Will never buy anything but bison burger after trying this!" - Megan (Lincoln, NE)

"This is the best filet mignon I have ever tasted. Will definitely make this my #1 choice. Thank you it was delicious." - Marie S. (New Jersey)

3. Bison is very versatile.

There is so much you can do with bison meat. Bison comes in all the same cuts as beef, and can be used in all the same ways. You can substitute ground bison in any recipe calling for a ground meat and there is so much you can do with bison roasts, steaks and burger.

4. Bison are naturally raised - no hormones, no steroids.

Did you know that it's actually illegal to use steroids and growth hormones in raising bison? Members of the National Bison Association all adhere to certain standards and abide by the no growth hormones and no steroids rules. So, when you buy bison meat, whether it's from us or some other reputable farmer, you can be certain that the bison were raised naturally and not pumped with hormones, antibiotics and steroids.

5. Bison are free range and ethically raised.

Bison are natural grazers, roaming freely, which means bison can be minimally handled and are humanely treated. Because of their roaming instincts, ranchers don't have to worry as much about bison grazing areas dry and can let bison do their thing while still insuring the health of the grass and the land.

At NebraskaBison.com, we adhere to our own "Responsibly Ranch Raised" standard. This policy promises that we raise our bison in a low stress lifestyle, keeping in mind the quality of life for our animals, the impact our ranch and process has on the environment and the impact our actions have on the quality of our finished bison meat product.

Not only is this something we know our customers are looking for, but really it's good for the animals, which is good for the quality of the meat and good for our land, so it just makes good sense!

6. Bison is high in protein

Not only is bison low in fat, calories and cholesterol, it's high in protein. In fact, the 4 oz. serving of Ground Bison which contains 11g of fat, contains 22g of protein. Many prime cuts contain even more, such as the 10 oz. Bison NY Strip Steak which contains 61g of protein.

Getting enough protein in your meals means you'll feel fuller quicker and longer and will help build muscle mass. Oh, and have I mentioned, bison is pretty high in iron too!

 7. It's easy to find pre-cooked items without added nitrates and MSG - Think hot dogs and summer sausage!

At NebraskaBison.com, we've worked to create several "value added" items like Bison Hot Dogs and Summer Sausage and are always working on new ideas to bring to our customers. Our Gourmet Bison Franks and Bison Summer Sausages are each made with bison as the only meat source and without any added nitrates, nitrites or MSG. We are currently working towards new Bison Jerky recipes which will be able to say the same!

8. You can buy bison direct from the rancher -- supporting small business and a family farm.

Randy and Jane Miller and Stacy Tamerius, owners of NebraskaBison.com

When you buy bison meat, most of the time you are supporting a small business - not a large corporation. While bison is gaining in popularity and larger companies are starting to get ahold of it to add to their offerings and product lines, there are still many outlets to support the family farmers and small businesses, such as when you shop at NebraskaBison.com or support your local farmers markets. After all, who better to buy bison from than the people who literally live to raise it!

Well, if you ask me, that's 8 good reasons to start enjoying bison meat. If you don't have a local source, or are looking for some items that may not be widely available, we will be more than happy to send our bison meat straight to your doorstep. Feel free to browse our catalog and don't hesitate to let us know if you ever have any questions about our company or our products.
